The Arizona Republic is one of the largest, most read newspapers in the Southwest. For more than 110 years, The Republic has been committed to delivering readers the news and information they rely on in a format they enjoy. In 2007, we transformed the process of gathering and disseminating that information by creating synergies between our newsroom and azcentral.com, our online partner. What resulted was the evolution of a newsroom into the Information Center, a shift that has allowed us to expand into multimedia and deliver relevant, targeted news across multiple platforms based on readers’ needs.
As an intern on our team, you could be utilizied in one of the following categories:
As a REPORTER:
Gather information from sources at any locations and through any means commonly available for news stories, although not necessarily at the skills level of a spot-news reporter. Interview subjects in person, over the telephone or via computer terminals, and in writing. Travel quickly to wherever the news occurs or is being disseminated. Research written materials, graphic and photographic materials, as well as audio and video recordings. Quickly and accurately report information, either verbally or electronically, for publication. Help in the production of photographs and graphics that would be helpful in supporting stories. Participate in brainstorming sessions.
As a PAGE DESIGNER:
Plan and design pages within sections/ features of the newspaper. Draw together multiple elements including stories, photos, graphics, illustrations, logos, information boxes, etc. into a cohesive, compelling presentation of the article. Use the tone and meaning of content to determine the size, style and arrangement of copy and visual elements and designs pages based upon space and aesthetic design concepts. Review copy to ensure that visual elements support the copy. Release pages within assigned deadlines. Create and/or produces simple/routine graphs, maps, charts, information graphics, logos, illustrations, etc. Produce cut-out images. Research information, materials, internet and may utilize audio and video elements to assist in the development of visual elements. Participate in brainstorming sessions.
As a COPY EDITOR:
Read stories for accuracy, fairness, completeness and adherence to legal and ethical standards. Demonstrate skills in spotting basic holes in stories, and checking for correct spelling and grammar. Write headlines and photo captions. Check page proofs and graphics. Participate in brainstorming sessions.
Qualified candidates will be required to have at least 2 years worth of college level journalism coursework, PC Skills, and journalism experience is helpful.
Ideal candidates must have the ability to learn the Information Center processes, procedures and operations, as well as, the ability to learn the GCI application. Strong language, writing, and reporting skills, ability to handle multiple tasks under the pressures of deadlines, and the ability to plan and organize work are a must; Candidates must posses basic math skills. (For Reporter , also requires moderate in-town travel and access to a car)
